Why does a water heater need an expansion tank?
Every time your water heater cycles, the water inside grows. If your home has a one-way valve β a check valve on the main, a pressure-reducing valve (PRV), or a backflow preventer β the expanded water cannot flow backward into the street. Pressure climbs until something gives: the temperature-and-pressure relief (T&P) valve drips, a soldered joint weeps, or a fixture gasket blows. Where and how do you mount the expansion tank?
The expansion tank mounts on the cold-water inlet pipe above or beside the water heater. Never install it on the hot side β the bladder will degrade faster, and the tank won't intercept pressure before it hits the heater. Most plumbers hang the tank vertically from a tee fitting on the cold line, using a threaded nipple screwed into the tank's 3/4β³ female inlet.
Code requires the tank to be accessible for service, and many inspectors want a shutoff valve between the tank and the heater so you can isolate the tank without draining the entire system. If the tank weighs more than 5 pounds when full (most 4.5-gallon and larger tanks do), secure it with a metal support strap anchored to a stud or the water-heater platform. What precharge pressure should the tank have?

Do you need a plumber or can you DIY?
