A dishwasher that smells, leaves grit, or won't dry usually just needs cleaning — in four spots most people never touch: the filter, the interior, the spray arms, and the door gasket. Ten minutes a month keeps it running like new.

Where is the dishwasher filter and how do I clean it?

At the bottom of the tub, usually a twist-out cylinder. Food and grease collect there, and a clogged filter is the top cause of smells and gritty dishes. Pull it out and rinse it under warm water monthly (scrub gently if needed). This one task fixes most dishwasher complaints.

How do I deep-clean the inside?

Run an empty hot cycle with vinegar — place a cup of white vinegar upright on the top rack and run it. It dissolves grease, mineral buildup, and odors. Do it monthly, and the whole machine smells fresh and washes better. A baking-soda rinse cycle helps too.

Why are my dishes coming out gritty?

Often clogged spray-arm holes. Mineral deposits and food bits block the little jets, so water can't reach the dishes. Pull the spray arms (they usually pop or twist off) and clear each hole with a toothpick or thin wire. Spinning, clear jets mean clean dishes.

Should I clean the door gasket?

Yes — the rubber gasket around the door traps gunk, grows mildew, and is a common source of smells and small leaks. Wipe it down with a damp cloth (and a little vinegar) regularly, getting into the folds. Clean gasket, no odor, good seal.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my dishwasher smell bad?

Almost always the filter or door gasket. Rinse the filter, wipe the gasket, and run a vinegar cycle — that clears the vast majority of odors.

Can I use bleach in my dishwasher?

Avoid bleach in stainless-steel dishwashers — it can damage them. Vinegar and baking soda are safer and effective for routine cleaning.
