Drafty windows can quietly inflate your heating bill all winter. The good news: four fixes take under an hour combined and cost very little — check the weatherstripping, add a draft snake, apply shrink film, and caulk the frame gaps. Together they make a cold room noticeably warmer.

How do I check window weatherstripping?

Inspect it every fall. The weatherstripping around a window's moving parts gets brittle, flattened, or torn over time, leaving gaps. Run your hand around the sash on a windy day — if you feel a draft, peel out the old strip and replace it with fresh adhesive foam or V-seal. Cheap and quick.

Do draft snakes actually work?

Yes, instantly. A draft snake (or draft stopper) is a simple fabric tube that blocks the gap along a window sill or door bottom where cold air pours in. It works in minutes, costs almost nothing, and you can even make one. Great for an old window you're not ready to replace.

What is window shrink film?

Shrink film is a clear plastic kit you tape over the inside of a window and shrink tight with a hair dryer, creating an insulating air gap — like a cheap, temporary storm window. It's barely visible, seals an old leaky window for the season, and pays for itself in saved heat.

Where should I caulk around windows?

Caulk the fixed gaps where the window frame meets the wall, inside and out. A thin, smooth bead seals cracks that weatherstripping can't (those handle the moving parts). See our caulking and weatherstripping guide for the full technique. Do it before the cold sets in.

Frequently asked questions

Is it cheaper to weatherproof or replace windows?

Weatherproofing costs a fraction of replacement and recovers most of the lost heat — do it first. Replace windows when they're failing structurally, not just drafty.

When should I weatherproof windows?

In fall, before heating season, while temperatures are mild enough for caulk and film to apply well.
