Whole-House Humidifier Maintenance: 4 Seasonal Tasks
A whole-house humidifier, built into your HVAC, fights the dry winter air that causes cracked skin, static, and shrinking woodwork. But it needs simple seasonal care, or it turns into a source of mineral scale and mold. Four tasks keep it healthy: replace the panel, set the right level, clean the tray, and shut it off in summer.
How often do I replace the humidifier water panel?
Replace the water panel (evaporator pad) every heating season — at least once a year, more in hard water. This pad is what the air passes through to pick up moisture; minerals clog it until it stops working. A fresh pad each fall keeps humidity output strong and prevents buildup. It's the single most important task.
What humidity level should I set?
Set indoor humidity between 30 and 45 percent. Too low and you get dry air and static; too high and you get condensation on windows, which leads to mold and wood damage. In very cold weather, dial it toward the lower end to avoid window condensation. A hygrometer confirms where you actually are.
Why clean the humidifier tray?
The tray and water lines collect mineral scale and can grow mold and bacteria. Clean the tray at the start and end of the season (and midway in hard water) with a vinegar solution to dissolve scale. A clean unit puts clean moisture into your air; a neglected one can spread mold spores through the whole house.
Should I turn the humidifier off in summer?
Yes — shut the humidifier off for summer. You don't need added moisture when it's humid out, and leaving it running can over-humidify and feed mold. Turn off the unit and close its water supply (and damper, if it has one) in spring, then service and restart it in fall.

Logging the panel replacement and cleanings keeps the air comfortable and clean. Okoniq Property Hub keeps it with your home maintenance records in one private place.
Frequently asked questions
Why are my windows fogging up with the humidifier on?
The humidity is set too high for the outdoor temperature. Lower the setting until condensation stops — persistent window fog leads to mold and rot.
Whole-house or portable humidifier?
Whole-house units (on the HVAC) treat the entire home with less hands-on filling; portables suit a single room. Both need regular cleaning to avoid mold.
