Tornado Safe Room Basics: Where to Go and How to Be Ready
A tornado warning gives you minutes, sometimes seconds β so the safety comes from decisions made in advance. Four basics: pick the right room, stock it, practice getting there, and make sure you'll actually get the warning. Ready.gov has full guidance.
Where is the safest place during a tornado?
Pick the lowest, most interior room available β a basement or storm cellar is best; otherwise a small interior room (bathroom, closet, hallway) on the lowest floor, away from windows and exterior walls. Put as many walls between you and the outside as possible. Get under sturdy cover and protect your head and neck. Avoid large-span rooms and anything with windows.
What supplies should be in a tornado safe space?
Keep a few supplies stored in that space so you're not gathering them as the storm hits: sturdy shoes and gloves, a flashlight, a battery/crank weather radio, water, a first-aid kit, helmets (bike helmets protect against head injury β a leading cause), and a whistle to signal for help if trapped. Keep them there year-round.
Should I practice the tornado plan?
Yes β practice the route to the safe space with everyone in the household, including kids, so it's automatic. In a real warning there's no time to think. Know how you'd get there fast, and where you'd shelter if you're away from home (and what to do if you're in a mobile home or vehicle β generally get to a sturdier structure).
How will I know a tornado is coming?
Use multiple ways to receive warnings β don't rely on outdoor sirens alone (they're meant for people outside). Have a NOAA weather radio with an alarm, enable Wireless Emergency Alerts on your phone, and use a weather app. Multiple alert sources mean you'll get the warning even at night while asleep, which is when tornadoes are deadliest.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between a tornado watch and warning?
A watch means conditions are favorable for tornadoes β be ready. A warning means one has been spotted or indicated by radar β take shelter immediately.
Is a bathroom a good tornado shelter?
An interior bathroom on the lowest floor (no windows) can be a reasonable option β the plumbing in the walls adds some structure, and a tub offers a place to crouch with cover over you. A basement or dedicated safe room is better if available.
