Space Heater Safety: 4 Rules to Prevent a Fire

🔧 Maintenance & Repairs June 24, 2026 · 2 min read space heater fire safety home safety winter

Space heaters are a leading cause of home heating fires — and nearly all of those fires are preventable. Four rules make one safe to use: keep clearance, never leave it unattended, plug it straight into the wall, and use one with tip-over protection.

How much space does a space heater need?

Keep three feet of clearance on all sides — away from curtains, bedding, furniture, paper, and anything else that can burn. Most space-heater fires start when the heater is too close to something flammable. Three feet of empty space around it is the single most important rule.

Can I leave a space heater running?

No. Never leave a space heater running unattended — turn it off when you leave the room and before you go to sleep. They heat fast and a problem (a tipped heater, an overheating cord) can become a fire in minutes. If you want overnight warmth, that's a job for your central heat, not a space heater.

Should I plug a space heater into a power strip?

Never. Plug it directly into a wall outlet — space heaters draw a lot of current, and a power strip or extension cord can overheat and catch fire. Use a single outlet, and don't run anything else on the same circuit if it trips or warms up. The cord should plug straight into the wall, full stop.

What safety features should a space heater have?

Look for tip-over auto shutoff (cuts power if it's knocked over) and overheat protection (shuts off if it gets too hot). Modern heaters include these; if yours doesn't, replace it. They're the safety net for exactly the situations that start fires — and core home fire safety.

Frequently asked questions

Are space heaters safe to use overnight?

It's not recommended — they shouldn't run unattended or while you sleep. Use central heating for overnight warmth and reserve the space heater for when you're awake and in the room.

Which type of space heater is safest?

Models with tip-over and overheat shutoff, a cool-to-touch housing, and a sturdy base are safest. Oil-filled radiator heaters run cooler on the surface than glowing-element types.
