How to Patch Drywall Holes and Cracks the Right Way

How you patch drywall depends entirely on the size of the hole. Small dings just need spackle; holes a few inches wide need a mesh patch kit; and every repair needs thin coats sanded smooth and a coat of primer before paint. Get those four things right and the patch becomes invisible — skip them and it shows through forever.

How do you fix small holes in drywall?

For nail holes and dings under an inch, all you need is spackle. Press a small amount into the hole with a putty knife, scrape it flush, let it dry, and sand lightly. That's it. Lightweight spackle barely shrinks, so one application usually does it for tiny holes — no patch, no mesh, no fuss.

What about medium-sized holes?

Holes roughly 1 to 6 inches — think a doorknob through the wall — need a self-adhesive mesh patch. Stick the mesh over the hole so it bridges the gap, then spread joint compound (mud) over it in thin layers, each one a little wider than the last to feather the edges. The mesh gives the compound something to hold onto so it doesn't crack or sink. Larger holes than that need a drywall plug cut to fit.

Why do you sand between coats?

Because thin coats, sanded smooth between each one, blend invisibly into the wall. Trying to fill a patch in one thick pass leaves ridges and shrinkage cracks. Apply a coat, let it dry, sand it flat, then apply the next slightly wider coat. Two or three thin coats with a light sanding between them is how you get a surface you can't feel with your hand in the dark.

Do I need to prime a drywall patch before painting?

Yes — and skipping it is the most common mistake. Bare joint compound soaks up paint differently than the surrounding wall, so the patch dries to a dull, flat spot that shows through forever, even under the right color. A quick coat of primer over the repair seals it so the finish paint goes on evenly. Then match your paint color and sheen and the patch disappears.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between spackle and joint compound?

Spackle dries fast and is best for small holes; joint compound (mud) is better for larger patches and taping because it's workable and feathers smoothly over a bigger area.

How long does drywall mud take to dry?

Most joint compounds dry in 12–24 hours per coat, depending on thickness and humidity. Quick-setting compounds cut that to under an hour but are less forgiving.

Why does my patch keep cracking?

Usually too-thick coats or skipping the mesh on a bigger hole. Thin layers and proper reinforcement stop the cracking.
