Look for crushed or bent hangers. This happens when joists were forced into place or when the deck settled unevenly. A bent hanger can't transfer load properly and should be replaced. Probe the ledger and the house rim joist with an awl or flathead screwdriver. Push gently into the wood every 2 feet along the ledger's length and at each end. Healthy wood resists penetration; decayed wood feels soft and the tool sinks in more than ¼ inch with light pressure.

Pay special attention to the top edge of the ledger where it meets the house, the ends of the board, and any area that stays shaded and damp. Rot often starts where flashing is missing or where the ledger traps moisture against the house sheathing.
