Heat Pump Maintenance: Keep It Efficient Year-Round
A heat pump works year-round — cooling in summer, heating in winter — so it gets more runtime than a furnace or AC alone and needs care in both seasons. Four habits keep it efficient and dependable: clean the coils, clear the clearance, check the defrost cycle, and change the filter.
How do I clean heat pump coils?
Hose down the outdoor coils every few months. Like an AC condenser, the heat pump's outdoor coil sheds (and absorbs) heat, and dirt, pollen, and grass clippings make it work harder. With the power off, gently rinse the fins from the inside out — never a pressure washer, which bends the fins. Clean coils mean better efficiency in both modes.
How much clearance does a heat pump need?
Keep about two feet of clearance around the outdoor unit — trim shrubs, pull weeds, and clear leaves and snow. Restricted airflow drops efficiency and strains the system. In winter, keep snow and ice from piling against or on top of the unit so it can breathe and drain.
Why check the defrost cycle in winter?
In heating mode, frost forms on the outdoor coil, and the heat pump runs a defrost cycle to melt it. Watch that it works — the unit should periodically melt the frost rather than icing over solid. A coil encased in ice can't absorb heat and signals a problem (low refrigerant, a stuck reversing valve, or a defrost fault) worth a service call.
Does a heat pump need filter changes?
Yes — the indoor air handler has a filter just like a furnace. Replace the indoor air filter on schedule (every 1–3 months) to keep airflow strong. Because a heat pump runs much of the year, its filter loads up faster — check it monthly, like a furnace filter.
Track both seasons
A heat pump needs spring and fall attention; logging it keeps you on track. Okoniq Property Hub keeps it with your home maintenance records in one private place. Watch for HVAC warning signs.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my heat pump icing up in winter?
A little frost is normal; a solid coating of ice that doesn't clear means a defrost problem, low refrigerant, or airflow issue. Clear obvious snow/ice and call a pro if it persists.
How often should a heat pump be professionally serviced?
Ideally twice a year — before heating season and before cooling season — plus your own coil cleaning and filter changes. Year-round use makes regular service worthwhile.
